The ‘Romney Marsh Meanders’ cycle pack

The Romney Marsh Meanders cycle pack has five self guided cycle routes around the flat, peaceful lanes of the Romney Marsh.

The Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership has waymarked each of the five routes with brown and white arrow discs with a number in the middle. These metal discs are on oak wooden posts on the sides of the road or on existing metal road signs. Follow the numbered arrows which is relevant to the cycle route you are doing.

Each cycle ride in the pack includes: an illustrated map of the route; route directions; and information regarding key places of interest that you pass along the route, from the historic churches to the natural history.

Sustrans Route Two

The National Cycle Network Route Two, South Coast Trail runs from Dover to Portsmouth. The route enters the Romney Marsh at Hythe initially following the seafront before quickly finding the quiet, flat country lanes characteristic of the Romney Marsh. The route weaves a pleasant path on lanes that are periodically bordered by hedges of hawthorn, blackthorn and willow, before emerging to provide superb views across an open landscape with dramatic open skies. The route takes in several Marsh villages each with their own church which together have become another endearing feature of the Romney Marsh. You then arrive at the town of Lydd. From there the trail continues on through Camber close to the popular beach of Camber Sands and eventually arrives in the picturesque Cinque Port Town of Rye. The route then leaves the Marsh by following the foot of Cadborough Cliff, passing Winchelsea train station and the historic town of Winchelsea.

Folkestone to Hythe

From Folkestone Harbour follow the National Cycle Route 2 through the Lower Leas and continue along the sea wall through Sandgate. Pass the Hythe Imperial Hotel before turning right and joining the Royal Military Canal in Hythe.

Hythe to St Mary in the Marsh

Continue along the canal passing the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway station before crossing over the canal at the Palmarsh footbridge and cycling down the lane to the Botolphs Bridge Pub. Turning left down Donkey Street, cycle through the picturesque village of Burmarsh and meander on quiet, country lanes to the small village of St Mary in the Marsh.

St Mary in the Marsh to Old Romney

Pedalling on to Old Romney, cross over the main road before enjoying the country lanes on the way to the historic town of Lydd. From here cycle along the newly constructed cycle path towards Rye. Continue on the road through the village of Camber before rejoining the cycle path and travel past the sheep fields of East Guldeford into the scenic town of Rye.

Linking to other routes

Link routes are waymarked to and from the local towns of New Romney and Dymchurch where you will find an abundance of shops and services. The Regional Cycle Route 11, which links Route 2 at Lydd to the National Cycle Route 18 at Ashford, is also waymarked with blue signs and white lettering.

Romney Marsh cycle stands

The Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership has installed a total of 32 cycle stands at various locations within the Romney Marsh area to complement the existing cycling infrastructure. The stands themselves have been designed to be sympathetic to the rural character of the Marsh landscape with oak uprights spanned by galvanised steel rails. Each stand carries a “Romney Marsh Cycle Stand” reflective logo. Look out for them next time you require a refreshment stop when meandering the Marsh lanes.
