Cycling

The RMCP carry out numerous free guided cycling events during the course of the year. Please look at the table of current cycling events at the bottom of this page.

Romney Marsh is one of the most magical regions in England to cycle with your family. The flat quiet country lanes with numerous church towers dotting the wide open landscape makes this far reach of Kent an ideal place to bring your bike and explore.

The ‘Romney Marsh Meanders’ cycle pack
The award winning Romney Marsh Meanders is a pack of five self-guided cycle rides for both the wobbly novice or experienced cyclist. Beautifully illustrated by local artists the cycle routes range from 10 to 42 miles. You can pedal the quiet lanes of the Marsh On The Trail of Dr Syn keeping an eye out for smugglers, or experience the delights of the unique Marsh wildlife and learn about local Marsh legends.

Waymarking of the 'Romney Marsh Meanders' cycle pack
The Romney Marsh Meanders cycle pack has five self guided cycle routes around the flat, peaceful lanes of the Romney Marsh. The Romney Marsh Countryside Project has waymarked each of the five routes with brown and white arrowed discs with a number in the middle. These metal discs are on oak wooden posts on the sides of the road or on existing metal road signs. Follow the numbered arrows which is relevant to the cycle route you are doing.

Each cycle route is numbered:

1    On the Trail of Doctor Syn
2 A Sloe and Short Pedal on the Marsh
3 Sea of Change
4 Rural Rides
5 Fifteen Marsh Churches

Sustrans Route 2
The National Cycle Network Route Two, South Coast Trail runs from Dover to Portsmouth. The route enters the Romney Marsh at Hythe initially following the seafront before quickly finding the quiet, flat country lanes characteristic of the Romney Marsh. The route weaves a pleasant path on lanes that are periodically bordered by hedges of Hawthorn, Blackthorn and Willow, before emerging to provide superb views across an open landscape with dramatic open skies. The route takes in several Marsh villages each with their own church which together have become another endearing feature of the Romney Marsh. You then arrive at the town of Lydd. From there the trail continues on through Camber close to the popular beach of Camber Sands and eventually arrives in the picturesque Cinque Port Town of Rye. The route then leaves the Marsh by following the foot of Cadborough Cliff, passing Winchelsea train station and the historic town of Winchelsea.

Romney Marsh Cycle Stands
The Romney Marsh Countryside Project has installed a total of 32 cycle stands at various locations within the Romney Marsh area to complement the existing cycling infrastructure. The stands themselves have been designed to be sympathetic to the rural character of the Marsh landscape with oak uprights spanned by galvanised steel rails. Each stand carries a “Romney Marsh Cycle Stand” reflective logo. Look out for them next time you require a refreshment stop when meandering the Marsh lanes.

The Shepway Cyclethon
Every year the Romney Marsh Countryside Project and Shepway District Council organise the ‘Shepway Cyclethon’. This date is now firmly established in the calender with more than 200 cyclists of all ages coming together on a Sunday in June to cycle a route around the Marsh landscape. Everyone who joins in gets a free t-shirt and a free snack on return to the start at St Martins Field, New Romney. Drinks are also provided by Lathe Barn tea rooms at half-distance. If you’ve not taken part in the Cyclethon before, why not come and join us this year and discover the unique character and beauty of the Romney Marsh for yourself.
