Cycling National Cycle Route Two
Folkestone to Rye – 32 miles (52km)

             National Cycle Network - Route 2


From Folkestone Harbour follow the National Cycle Route 2 through the Lower Leas and continue along the sea wall through Sandgate. Pass the Hythe Imperial Hotel before turning right and joining the Royal Military Canal in Hythe.

Continue along the canal passing the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway station before crossing over the canal at the Palmarsh footbridge and cycling down the lane to the Botolphs Bridge Pub. Turning left down Donkey Street, cycle through the
picturesque village of Burmarsh and meander on quiet, country lanes to the small village of St Mary in the Marsh.

Pedalling on to Old Romney, cross over the main road before enjoying the country lanes on the way to the historic town of Lydd. From here cycle along the newly constructed cycle path towards Rye. Continue on the road through the village of Camber before rejoining the cycle path and travel past the sheep fields of East Guldeford into the scenic town of Rye.

The National Cycle Route 2 runs from Dover to Portsmouth. The route is waymarked by blue signs with white lettering and a red square containing the number 2. The signs are located at all junctions along the route.

Link routes are waymarked to and from the local towns of New Romney and Dymchurch where you will find an abundance of shops and services.

The Regional Cycle Route 11, which links Route 2 at Lydd to the National Cycle Route 18 at Ashford, is also waymarked with blue signs and white lettering.

Places to visit

Romney Marsh Churches
While cycling through the area keep a look out for some of the famous Romney Marsh churches. En route you will pass St Mary in the Marsh, the final resting place of author Edith Nesbit, and Lydd, the Cathedral of the Marsh. Many of the Marsh churches are open while at others you may have to obtain the key before letting yourself in

RSPB Reserve, Dungeness
Open from 9am to sunset daily, the reserve is not only important for its bird life with some 450 species of plants
occurring here along with a fascinating array of creatures such as marsh frogs, newts dragonflies and medicinal leeches. Visitor Centre 10am - 5pm (4pm Nov to Feb). Admission to members free. Tel (01797) 320588

Rye Harbour Local Nature Reserve

De Folkestone à Rye – 32 milles (52 km)

A partir du port de Folkestone suivez l’itinéraire Cyclable National Numéro 2 traversant la partie inférieure du “Leas” et continuez à longer le mur du bord de mer à travers Sandgate. Passez devant le “Hythe Hotel Impérial“ avant de tourner à droite et de rejoindre le Canal Militaire Royal dans Hythe.

Continuez le long du canal passant devant la gare ferroviaire du chemin de fer miniature “Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch” avant de traverser le canal à la passerelle piétons de “Palmarsh” et de continuer à descendre en vélo le chemin vicinal qui mène au Pub de “Botholps Bridge”. Tournez à gauche dans “Donkey Street “ passant devant les salons de thé de “Lathe Barn”, traversez ensuite le village pittoresque de Burmarsh et continuez sur les chemins vicinaux tranquilles et méandreux jusqu’au petit village de “ St Mary in the Marsh.”

Au village d’Old Romney, traversez la route principale avant de savourer les chemins de campagne menant à la ville historique de Lydd. A partir d’ici, empruntez la piste cyclable nouvellement construite en direction de Rye. Continuez sur la route au travers du village de Camber avant de rejoindre à nouveau la piste cyclable et de continuer au milieu des prairies à moutons d’East Guldeford en direction de la ville scénique de Rye.
